Caravan Gas Explosion Fire

In June 2022, there was a small gas explosion behind a fridge in a caravan, which then consequently caused a fire. The couple who owned the caravan, who were inside at the time of the explosion, escaped unharmed, alerted surrounding residents to the situation. The alerted neighbours elected to help with their traditional extinguishers, and disconnecting the mains and isolating the gas. As you can tell by the photo, one of the extinguishers used on the outside was a foam extinguisher and the other was a powder extinguisher, used on the inside.

Unfortunately, the traditional extinguishers had little to no effect on the fire, as they were unable to get behind and in to the cavity behind the fridge. In addition, the fridge was unable to be moved out of the way to gain better access to the space behind.

Clive, the owner of a Fire Safety Stick heard the explosion and rushed to help the neighbours in need. When arriving he quickly realised that the traditional extinguishers, that had been used, were not able to reach the fire, that was soon going to be bigger and more than unsafe to tackle. Clive then proceeded to activate his FSS100 (100 second Fire Safety Stick) and successfully extinguish the fire that was in the cavity, but he continued to use the entire discharge time to prevent reignition. This was all achieved because the gas produced from the Fire Safety Stick was able to weave its way in to the cavity and reach the source of the flames, whereas a traditional extinguisher needed a direct line of sight/attack to produce the same or similar results. We are very proud that the Fire Safety Stick was able to help and prevent further loss of property, and in addition that nobody was hurt during the event!

Email from Clive, describing the event in his own words: ‘Hi, I wanted to say how good the Fire (Safety) Stick was this evening whilst out in our Motorhome enjoying an early evening BBQ. (We) heard a bang and a scream from a neighbouring caravan. The couple were inside when there was a gas explosion, (they) both managed to escape unharmed but the flames took hold in the cavity behind the fridge. Several guys ran to rescue disconnecting the mains electric and isolating the gas. The fire stick worked wonders in the cavity reaching areas (the) traditional extinguishers would not have been able to reach. (I) Certainly recommend them to everyone to have one close to hand. TVR Drives Home After Fire

Driving home from Oulton Park in August 2019, Dave Crook’s TVR Tuscan caught fire. The flames from the carburettors were coming out of the vents in the bonnet towards the windscreen and even melted the windscreen wipers. Luckily for him, he had bought a Fire Safety Stick a few weeks earlier at Silverstone Classics. And using it, the fire was out within 15 seconds. Here’s what really amazed him, having cleaned the area, pressurised the fuel lines to make sure there were no leaks, the engine started first time and he was fine to drive home! OK, he still had to repair the burnt bonnet and other cosmetic damage, but he’s a very happy chap. Imagine if he had a standard powder extinguisher as many do, even if he had put the fire out, he would have been faced with a bill of several thousand pounds with an engine rebuild.

This is the entire email received from David that is addressed to the TVR Drivers Car Club. ‘I have been looking at installing a full fire system on the Tuscan as I suffer with small fires sometimes when I start up when very warm, the carbs blow back, this has now happened 4 times. While at Silverstone we found out that one of the TVR members (Oliver) on route to Silverstone he had a fire and he lost his 3000s – totally burnt out.

On Sunday night, after Oulton Park Gold, I had a carburettor fire and it was the biggest one yet. Flames out of the bonnet and melted my windscreen wipers, plus some cosmetic damage. So, I was able to test the newly bought Fire safety Stick which put the blazing fuel fire out within 10 to 15 seconds (see attached pictures). Once the engine had cooled down and cleaned the area around the carburettor’s of any burnt paint, pressurised the fuel lines, checked for leaks, and any damage, which there wasn’t, the engine fired up first time. In addition, I use braided fuel lines with speed flow connections (which survived the flames), I would imagine normal fuel lines would have melted. After (a) fire (a) powder fire extinguisher leaves a horrible mess which eats into all your polished metal work, and I would not have been able to have (driven) the remaining 2 miles home.

These (Fire Safety Stick) fire extinguishers leave no damaging mess, (are) very easy to use, and I would recommend one per car. I am now doing a full carburettor rebuild and cleaning and changing all the fuel lines just in case of any heat damage and all speed flow attachments. Also I am doing a few other modifications from what I have learnt from this experience. By the way I am fully fine – no injuries and returned to Oulton Park the next day in the Taimar. I think without this particular extinguisher I would have lost the car. Sometimes its good to know something will do the Job when needed. These extinguishers (have a shelf life of) 15 years, but (traditional) fire extinguishers only (have a shelf life of) 5 years.

With there being a few TVR fires which are fuel related I thought I would share this experience with you.

Rally Car Saved in Stage

Ian Paterson was competing in the recent Argyll Rally when his rally car had a fire. Ian and his team instinctively activated the cars on board Fire suppression system, as well as two FIA approved handheld extinguishers, which all three of these failed to extinguish the fire. Knowing the traditional extinguishers were not working, he reached for a Fire Safety Stick on board and used a 100 second discharge Fire Safety Stick. The fire was efficiently extinguished before it could cause further damage. He was left wishing he had reached for the Fire Safety Stick sooner, instead of using the other handheld devices. It certainly would have saved him a lot less damage and mess! The Fire Safety Stick has already been proven to be highly effective in several competition fires where traditional extinguishers had been unable to control the fire effectively. Home Kitchen Fire (Grill)

Earlier in the Summer (2020), Richard Sails was in his kitchen with his wife when they fancied some bacon butties. So, they turned the grill on and popped the bacon under it. The next thing they saw were two-foot-high flames spouting from the back of the grill. He immediately switched off the grill, but the flames kept shooting out of the back of the cooker.

It would appear the air vent at the back was lined with grease and fat from many years of use, and this was now on fire. The flames from the fire continued with no sign of it easing. Richard’s initial reaction, like many, was to grab his fire blanket and attempt to smother the fire which he tried. However, it soon became apparent that the fire was still raging underneath as the flames and smoke began to escape from beneath it. Fortunately, he had a Fire Safety Stick close by in his garage, so grabbed it, discarded the cap and activated it. Then safely threw it under into the grill. Within just two to three seconds, the flames had stopped while he joined his wife out into the safety of the garden. During this time, the Fire Safety Stick continued to discharge, not just acting as the extinguisher to the fire but ongoing fire suppression ensuring that the fire could not re-ignite. Indeed, a potentially terrifying experience for the Sails, it could have been much worse had they not have had the Fire Safety Stick.

It certainly demonstrates how you can activate it and still follow the fire brigades safety advice of get out, stay out – during that time the FSS can extinguish that small household fire and suppress any re-ignition within an evacuated room. Therefore an initially small fire was prevented from becoming a much larger one with devastating effects. Once it was deemed safe to go back in the kitchen, the white “smoke” or vapour that had discharged from the FSS was still present, but this is totally harmless, non-damaging and was soon vented out of the room. Once done so, it could be seen that the Fire Safety Stick left no damage or odour in the kitchen. There was only the mess around the cooker itself as a result of the flames. This was soon wiped down and back to normal.

Richard and his wife said they were planning on replacing the old cooker and refurbishing the kitchen since they had moved in a few years ago. Richard added they would certainly make sure they have a Fire Safety Stick mounted in its bracket under the kitchen sink in the future.
